AddVAT.com is a free online VAT calculator that we built and run. Type an amount, set the rate, and add or remove VAT in one click. It also has an Insurance Premium Tax calculator and plain-English guides to UK VAT.
Why we built it
Anyone who writes quotes, checks invoices or prices stock works out VAT all the time. Adding 20% is simple. Taking VAT off a price that already includes it is where people slip up. Knocking 20% off £120 gives £96, but the right answer is £100, because £120 is £100 plus 20%. Mistakes like that end up on invoices and in VAT returns.
Small business owners, sole traders and bookkeepers need the right figure fast, on whatever device is to hand. Opening a spreadsheet or signing up to an accounting tool for one sum is overkill.
What it does
- Add or deduct VAT at the standard 20% rate or any rate you type in, such as the 5% reduced rate.
- A calculation history, so you can check a run of figures.
- An Insurance Premium Tax calculator. Add or remove IPT at 12% or 20%, or mark a policy as exempt.
- Guides and FAQs. Plain-English answers on UK VAT rates, registration and how VAT works, with links to GOV.UK.
- Works on a phone, with no account to create.
What it shows about our work
AddVAT is small on purpose. One tool does one job and loads fast. Small tools like this are a cheap way to test an idea before building something bigger, and we often suggest the same approach to clients.
