Bridging the Digital Divide: How FCOMS UK CIC & Barnardo’s Empowered a Local Family
Category: Case Study | Community Impact
Date: April 24, 2026
At FCOMS UK CIC, our mission is simple yet profound: to empower individuals with essential IT skills and foster digital inclusion across the UK. We believe that access to technology is not a luxury, but a fundamental necessity – especially for children navigating their education.
Recently, we had the privilege of partnering with Barnardo’s to deliver a vital tech lifeline to a family in need. For our current funders, corporate sponsors, and community partners, this case study exemplifies exactly how your contributions translate into immediate, life-changing impact on the ground.
The Challenge: Compounding Barriers to Education
Earlier this month, we worked on a referral with Akil Scott, an Early Help Advisor at the Barnardo’s Yardley and Hodge Hill Early Help team. They were supporting a family facing significant financial difficulties that were directly hindering the children’s ability to access educational resources.
The situation was highly complex, as the digital exclusion was further impacted by the family’s complicated mental and physical health needs. In households facing such layered challenges, digital poverty often acts as a massive multiplier of stress, isolating children from their schooling and straining family dynamics. The family urgently required a reliable PC to bridge this gap.
Our Response: Swift, Professional, and Direct Action
Efficiency is at the core of our device upcycling and donation initiatives. When a charity partner identifies a critical need in the West Midlands, FCOMS UK CIC mobilises immediately to provide a tailored IT solution.
As noted by the Barnardo’s team, our communication and organisation were “swift and professional”. Our team successfully processed the referral and our organiser personally delivered a fully equipped PC directly to the family without delay. By streamlining the referral-to-delivery process, we ensure that administrative bottlenecks never stand in the way of a child’s education or a family’s wellbeing.
The Impact: Empowering Education and Restoring Harmony
The true measure of our work isn’t just in the hardware we deploy, but in the human outcomes we facilitate. The arrival of the PC created an immediate, tangible shift in the household environment, an impact echoed directly by the family who received the support.
We were incredibly moved by the direct feedback shared by the family through their Barnardo’s advisor:
“The equipment they (FCOMS UK) sent over has put a really big smile on my children’s face, they will stop fighting each other now to do their homework, the organiser called and delivered it (PC) without delay, we are extremely thankful”
This powerful quote highlights three crucial outcomes that our funders and partners help us achieve every day:
- Educational Access: The children now have the dedicated tools required to do their homework and actively engage with their learning.
- Improved Family Dynamics: By removing the scarcity of a shared, inadequate device, the tension and “fighting” over screen time were instantly alleviated, promoting a calmer home environment.
- Restored Dignity: A prompt, respectful delivery process demonstrated to the family that they are valued and supported by their local community.
Looking Ahead: Scaling Our Impact Through Partnership
The success of this intervention has laid the groundwork for expanded collaboration. Barnardo’s has already shared the outcomes of our work with their colleagues across the Early Help space, with the hope of supporting even more families in the area.
As we look to the remainder of 2026, FCOMS UK CIC is perfectly positioned to support an increasing number of families identified by frontline social care professionals – but we cannot do it alone.
Partner With Us to Expand Digital Inclusion
This success story is just one example of how FCOMS UK CIC transforms donated tech and grant funding into tangible community impact. However, the demand for digital inclusion continues to outpace supply.
We are actively seeking funding partners, CSR-driven businesses, and tech donors to help us scale our upcycling and IT support initiatives. When you fund FCOMS UK CIC, you are directly investing in children’s education, alleviating family poverty, and building a more digitally inclusive society.
